Problem and Solution
A childcare facility wanted to streamline their daily routines and procedures. They deal with varied experience levels and high staff turnover.
Training needed to be accessed on tablets, and be completed in under 15 minutes.
This course provides a fun and engaging way to learn and review bottle feeding infants. Learners will:
Gain quick, practical knowledge to apply immediately
Test their skills in a safe environment using realistic scenarios
Feel more confident when feeding infants.
Process
In this course design, I applied several core instructional design principles to ensure an engaging and effective learning experience. The process began with the creation of a cohesive screen design that ties all course elements together, with personalization to keep learners engaged.
Clear learning objectives were established at the start to guide the training's focus. The design also included simple but necessary features, such as the ability to mute audio for different learner preferences.
I emphasized personalization through friendly, conversational writing and used an on-screen character to enhance learner engagement and attention.
For the training content, I incorporated chunking (via tab interactions) and multimedia elements (video and text) to address various learning styles, applying the modality and segmentation principles.
I also included scenario-based knowledge checks to encourage active engagement and critical thinking.
Additionally, cognitive load was reduced by minimizing text and using visual cues, ensuring a smoother learning experience.
Analysis and Takeaways
Through this design, I leveraged key instructional design principles to foster a learner-centered environment. Personalization and social cues helped build connection, increasing learner motivation.
I also applied the segmentation principle by breaking the material into manageable chunks, giving learners more control over their pace and focus areas. The use of both visual and auditory elements (modality principle) ensured a comprehensive learning experience.
The incorporation of realistic scenarios and decision-making exercises encouraged the application of knowledge in real-world contexts, improving retention.
However, there are areas for further improvement, such as increasing diversity in avatars and adding microlearning pieces for reinforcement.
I also recognize the importance of accessibility, by adding features like text-to-speech and providing notes for reading preferences. This highlights my commitment to creating adaptive and inclusive learning experiences.
