Problem and Solution
New parents are overwhelmed with the amount of information presented to them after having a baby. When you put your baby "safe to sleep" for every sleep, you reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome ( SIDS ) and other causes of sleep-related infant death.
Process
Guided by the ADDIE model, I iterated on each step of my process until I was confident with the look, feel, and content of the learning experience.
Before reaching full development, my process included creating an action map, drafting a storyboard, designing visual mockups, gaining user feedback and building out an interactive prototype.
Full Development
For this project, I used Articulate Rise, Canva and Microsoft Office.
To keep tired and overwhelmed learners engaged, I used many interactive features such as labeled graphics and scenario-based learning. Studies show that these realistic learning scenarios can help students develop skills, improve knowledge retention, and increase motivation.
Analysis and Takeaways
I have gained valuable insights into the instructional design process while working on this project. These lessons will guide me as I continue to develop my skills and create more learning experiences.
Maintaining a Learner-Centered Approach: Throughout the project, I generated several creative ideas that I wanted to implement. However, I consistently asked myself questions like, "Will this engage the learner effectively?", “What impact will this course have on the learners?” and "How will this change improve the learning experience?" By prioritizing the learner's perspective in every decision, I ensured that the project design was driven by their needs.
The Importance of Iteration: This experience underscored the value of feedback. Input from the community and peers often provided fresh insights I hadn't considered. Reviewing feedback helped me stay focused on meeting the learner's requirements and delivering an outstanding learning experience.
Embracing Problem-Solving: I learn best through problem-solving. Engaging in the process of finding solutions independently not only helps me consolidate my knowledge but also enhances my skill development more effectively than simply being instructed.
This product was very well received by those who experienced it. Some testimonials include:
“Simple clearly presented layout , very informative information with clear instructions to keep my baby safe and ensure a good nights sleep for everyone!”
“Just finished the safe sleep course, very concise with good clear recommendations, not just for new parents, but also useful up to date best practices for carers and grandparents. Very informative on all aspects of keeping babies safe. Will share this with friends and family!”
